There Is No Social Media Mandate

There is a lot of buzz around social media and it’s tempting to think that everybody needs to have a social presence. But there is no social mandate!

People often ask if they need to be on Twitter or Facebook. The answer is: “We don’t know” until we’ve had a chance to assess your situation. In the absence of more information, it is impossible to make that call.

On the other hand, a social media listening strategy IS a mandate. You need to know what people are saying about your business online or you can’t put it right or learn from it.

A Holistic Approach

To know if social media marketing is right for you depends, at a minimum, on your objectives, target audience, and resources. It’s important to consider opportunity costs and evaluate traditional marketing tactics against social media ones. Often a marketing mix of old and new, and a combination of online and off-line, is the best strategy.

Natascha ThomsonNatascha has 20 years experience in global enterprise marketing at startups and enterprises and holds two Master’s degrees. She is the co-author of 42 Rules for B2B Social Media Marketing, blogs on sites including LinkedIn, Business 2 Community, and Social Media Today and serves on the Social Shake-up Advisory Board.

As an Adjunct Instructor at UCSC Silicon Valley Extension, she teaches a Professional Awards Program in Social Media Marketing. In her free time, she is a yoga student and teacher.
